Reading
This year we will be using the Aiken County Balanced Literacy model for reading instruction in our classroom. This allows for students to be taught reading at their independent reading level and allows for flexible small grouping instruction. Students will work each week on reading skills taught in class and practiced in "stations" while also meeting in small groups with the classroom teacher. Students will be held accountable for their work by using Literacy Logs that will be taken up twice a nine weeks for a grade using a rubric. Students are expected to practice skills they learn in class and apply that knowledge each week as they rotate through a variety of activities designed to supplement the classroom instruction. We will be using different stations throughout the year and the activities will become more challenging as we focus on preparing the students for third grade.
Please look for skills taught each week under the reading tab. These skills will be tested each week on Friday using a variety of formats. Students will also have a "cold comprehension" story that they are required to read independently and answer questions about on the weekly reading test.
We will be using Daily Academic Vocabulary words each week to increase your child's vocabulary to aide them when reading fiction and non-fiction texts. Students will be responsible for three or four words each week that are taught and reviewed daily. Students should be able to read the words and apply them in context for a short 5 question test that will be given on Friday. Please look for the words each week listed with the reading skills.
